Straight out of the package! This Daisho Tori Nanban Nabe Soup is perfect if you don’t want to make your soup base from scratch.
What is Tori Nanban?
In Japanese, the word “tori” means “chicken”. “Nanban” is used to denote something as foreign, or western style.
If one were to Google “tori nanban”, a ton of recipes for fried chicken comes up. However, change the search to “tori nanban udon”, recipes for soup will be brought forward.
From what I’ve gathered from my research on the internet, Tori Nanban Soup is traditionally served with udon. The broth for Tori Nanban will most likely be very similar to what your local Japanese restaurant will serve you when you order their udon.
Daisho Tori Nanban Nabe Soup Base
- This soup base is flavored with bonito and kelp.
- Other websites recommend to enjoy with chicken as the main protein to achieve a more robust chicken flavor.
- Can also be used for a nabe base, as the name implies. Be creative and add your desired toppings, such as mushrooms, green onions, leafy greens, or soba noodles.
Honest Review/Thoughts
This soup base was pretty good! The instant soup made it easy for us to take on our camping trip. Not too salty, or too sweet – simply full of umami! Flavors of bonito, kelp and soy sauce really complimented the veggies that we brought (enoki, shiitake, zucchini, etc). They also have other soup bases that I can’t wait to try! I highly recommend giving this a try!
