Anyone else’s allergies acting up lately? Spring has definitely sprung here in San Francisco and I’m finding it increasingly difficult to muster up the energy to cook myself full meals! I usually crave porridge when I’m feeling this way – there’s no excess oils to irritate my throat, it’s incredibly filling and totally customizable when it comes to toppings.
I’ve had a lot of different porridges (Chinese Congee/Jook, Filipino Arroz Caldo/Lugaw), which usually consist of chicken, pork, fish, salted egg, etc. When browsing around H-Mart, I saw they were having a sale on this Jinga Abalone Porridge (Jeonbok-Juk), so I knew I had to try it!
What is Jeonbok-Juk?
Jeonbok-Juk is known as the “King of Porridges” in Korea. Abalone is considered to be a high-quality protein and is one of the world’s most expensive seafood. The porridge could be made with the abalone’s internal organs for added health benefits. It’s also popular for being a nutritional supplement and digestive aid for those who are sick and for the elderly.
Jinga Abalone Porridge
- Jinga Abalone Porridge pouches are sold individually, as well as a boxed set of 3.
- Besides Abalone, this porridge contains two different types of mushrooms – King Oyster and Shiitake!

Honest Review/Thoughts
Jinga Abalone Porridge has gotten be through some very sick days! Being Filipino-American, I grew up on chicken stock based porridges, so the flavor of Jinga’s really surprised me! It was very sesame oil forward, which I wasn’t used to at first. I did need to adjust the flavor a bit by adding a dash of soy sauce. I also introduced some freshness to the dish with green onions and a boiled egg for added protein.
The abalone was cut into small chunks – the same size as the mushrooms, so at first glance it was tough to tell how much Abalone was in one packet. After sifting through the bowl, I was pleasantly surprised at how much Abalone they included. If you’re looking for a fast bowl of congee, give it a try!
