Ah, another post about an Instant Mabo Tofu packet. If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you would know that I am a lover of all things easy, convenient and of course, spicy. When I saw this packet during one of my grocery shopping trips, I stopped in my tracks and immediately got excited. Sichuan? Numbing spice? This practically called my name to come and take it home.
What is Mabo Tofu?
Originating from the Sichuan region of China, Mabo Tofu is a dish that is incredibly savory, and packed with umami. It’s primarily comprised of soft tofu and ground meat cooked in a sauce of chili bean paste (doubanjiang) and fermented black beans. Adding Sichuan peppercorns gives this dish a spice numbing addictiveness that makes it hard to stop eating!

Honest Reviews/Thoughts
For mabo tofu sauces, I usually gravitated towards House Food’s Instant Mabo Tofu sauce. I’m not sure how new Lee Kum Kee’s is, but once I saw “Hot” and “Sichuan Style” on the packaging, I had to try it out. Compared to House Food’s Mabo Tofu sauce, you can taste the peppercorns in this product more. I found it to be a bit more flavorful as well. I noticed that the chili oil used in Lee Kum Kee’s was more vibrant and red than House Foods.
Instead of “Hot”, I would say that this package was more of a mild to medium spice. The numbing was also mild – nothing to be afraid of! It gave some dimension to the dish without being overpowering. I would personally buy this mabo tofu sauce over House Foods version.
